How to Protect Hair During Bleaching

Bleach protection does not begin with a single additive. It begins with control of the entire service: diagnosis, a strand test, the minimum sufficient system intensity, correct ratio and saturation, time control, and avoiding repeated exposure on already weakened areas. Protective products can support the protocol, but they do not eliminate oxidative stress.

Bleaching solves a color problem while also creating oxidative stress in the hair fiber. Protection is therefore primarily about controlling the dose of chemical exposure. No additive can make an excessive procedure safe.

What Is Damaged During Bleaching

An alkaline peroxide-persulfate system breaks down melanin chromophores, but oxidation is not limited to pigment. Studies show changes in the cuticle and cortex, oxidation of proteins — especially sulfur-containing amino acids — and increasing protein loss as bleaching severity rises.

Five Levels of Protection

  1. Diagnosis. Color history, previous bleaching, elasticity, porosity and unevenness of the hair determine the acceptable chemical load.
  2. Strand test. It shows not only the rate of lift, but also what happens to hair quality after the planned processing time.
  3. Minimum sufficient intensity. A higher oxidizer percentage is not automatically the more professional choice.
  4. Precise application. Over-saturating already-lightened areas or overlapping the mixture can be more critical than the concentration number itself.
  5. Stopping at the right time. If hair quality deteriorates faster than the target lightness is reached, the procedure must be reassessed.

What Protective Products Can Do

Studies of cosmetic protectants show that protein- and polysaccharide-based compositions can reduce some mechanical consequences of chemical processing in model tests. This does not mean that any “bond/protein protector” neutralizes any bleaching process; efficacy depends on the specific formulation and protocol.

Protein Protection is used only in procedures where it is explicitly specified by the technical protocol. In particular, in bleach-powder color-removal washes it is used when the powder is mixed with oxidizer at ratios of 1:4, 1:5 or 1:6.
